Angra dos Reis has no less than 365 islands dotted in a sea of green, crystal-clear waters and two thousand beaches full of natural beauty. Surrounded by the Atlantic Forest and bathed by the emerald green sea, there are luxury condominiums, resorts and hotels that host tourists looking for the best for their holidays and weekends. The best part is the short distance: just 160 km – about 2 hours by car – separate this paradise from Rio.
A tour of Angra should, without a doubt, start at the sea. Diving is simply irresistible given the beauty of the sea. With a large number of shipwrecks and abundant marine life, Angra Bay is one of the best diving spots on the southeast coast, even for amateurs. A traditional maritime procession on the first day of the year is one of the city's biggest events.
Ilha Grande, the largest of the islands, is also the most famous: there are 86 beaches spread across its 190 km². To get there it takes around 1 hour by boat from the port of Angra. The place is perfect for trekking, trails and walks, with many options between hills, mountains, streams, rocks, slopes and beaches, most of them within the Atlantic Forest. In this scenario, places such as Lage do Guriri (Ponta de Castelhanos), Ilha de Jorge Grego, Ilha dos Meros and Naufrágios stand out. On the ocean side, one of the beaches preferred by visitors is Lopes Mendes, frequented by surf enthusiasts and divers. At Praia da Feiticeira, in addition to the narrow strip of white sand and many almond trees, visitors can enjoy, after a short walk, a beautiful 15 m high waterfall, with a natural pool and slide.
